Sodankylä Airport is a small regional airport in northern Finland that has a 1500 x 30 m runway that can handle aircraft up to the size and weight of an ATR42. The airport was opened in the early 1940s, when it served as a stopover point for the Petsamo route. Since 1966, the airport has been used by aviation enthusiasts. In 1975, a 1 100 m long gravel runway was completed. The asphalt runway and the airport building were completed in 1989, after which passenger traffic to Sodankylä began on the Oulu-Rovaniemi-Sodankylä-Ivalo route. However, the service was discontinued in 1996 as it was unprofitable. The route was operated by Air Botnia The airport is known as the base for the Aslak Rescue Helicopter and Medical Station. The area also has significant cold weather testing and research activities, as well as flight activities related to soil mapping and mineral exploration.
